Military Spouse Hiring Act

Maddy summaryHR 2033, the Military Spouse Hiring Act, expands the Work Opportunity Tax Credit to include spouses of active-duty military personnel. It adds "qualified military spouse" as an eligible category for the tax credit, meaning employers who hire such spouses can claim the credit. A "qualified military spouse" is defined as someone certified by a local agency as married to an active-duty service member at the time of hire. The credit applies to hires occurring after the bill's enactment date. This directly affects military spouses seeking employment and employers hiring them, providing a tax incentive to encourage their hiring.

Emerging Innovative Border Technologies Act

Maddy summaryThis bill requires the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) to develop a detailed plan within 180 days of enactment, outlining how it will identify, integrate, and deploy emerging technologies like AI, advanced sensors, and automated systems to enhance border security operations. The plan must assess privacy impacts, evaluate CBP Innovation Teams' work, identify technologies used by other agencies, and detail how new systems will replace outdated legacy programs. It also mandates annual reporting to Congress on technology pilots, transition progress to operational programs, and metrics for measuring effectiveness. The bill directly affects CBP and the Department of Homeland Security, focusing on concrete procedural requirements for technology adoption rather than specific policy outcomes.

SHIELD Against CCP Act

Maddy summaryHR 708, the SHIELD Against CCP Act, establishes a DHS working group to coordinate efforts against security threats posed by the Chinese Communist Party. The working group examines DHS programs targeting terrorism, cyber threats, border security, and transportation security, specifically focusing on the CCP's nontraditional tactics (like identity theft and visa exploitation), predatory economic practices, fentanyl trafficking, and illicit financial activity. It requires annual reports to Congress on these threats, identifies gaps in current responses, and ensures privacy compliance and coordination with federal and local partners. The working group expires seven years after its creation.

Subterranean Border Defense Act

Maddy summaryThis bill amends the 2023 National Defense Authorization Act to require the Department of Homeland Security to submit annual reports on counter-illicit tunnel operations, replacing a one-time reporting requirement with ongoing updates. It directly affects DHS officials responsible for border security operations and Congress, which receives these reports for oversight. The key mechanism is the annual reporting mandate, ensuring continuous assessment of tunnel threats rather than a single strategic plan development.

Pay Our Border Patrol and Customs Agents Act of 2025

Maddy summaryThis bill ensures that U.S. Border Patrol agents and Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers who remain on duty during a government shutdown receive their salaries. It appropriates funds from the Treasury for fiscal year 2025 to cover their pay during any shutdown period beginning after the bill's enactment. The provision specifically applies to CBP personnel who are not furloughed under standard shutdown protocols. It directly affects federal workers in CBP’s Border Patrol and Office of Field Operations during government funding gaps.

Protecting Military Assets Act of 2025

Maddy summaryHR 1935, the Protecting Military Assets Act of 2025, adds new grounds for denying entry to the U.S. and removing non-citizens who violate military property laws. Specifically, it makes individuals inadmissible if they've been convicted of or admitted to entering military, naval, or Coast Guard property without authorization (per 18 U.S.C. § 1382). It also makes such individuals deportable if already in the U.S. The bill directly affects non-citizens convicted under this specific federal offense, strengthening immigration enforcement for violations at military sites. This is a policy change to existing immigration law, not a new criminal offense.

Censuring Representative Al Green of Texas.

Maddy summaryThis resolution formally censures Representative Al Green (D-TX) for disrupting President Trump's address during a joint session of Congress on March 4, 2025. It requires him to appear in the House chamber for the public reading of the censure resolution, which states his actions violated decorum rules and brought disrepute to Congress. As a procedural resolution, it does not enact policy changes but serves as a formal reprimand for conduct during a congressional session.
