Transportation (Local Government)

This bill allows cities, towns, and villages in New York to set their own maximum speed limits on local roads that are not maintained by state or county departments. Under the new rules, these local governments can establish speed limits lower than the current 55 mph statutory maximum, provided the limit is not below 25 mph. The only exception permits schools to set a minimum speed of 15 mph within a specific distance of school buildings, entrances, or exits. The legislation applies immediately to all local highways within the state's municipalities.

Authorizes the posting by each municipality of turtle crossing signs on local roads located within such municipality; empowers the state commissioner of transportation to develop and implement rules and regulations authorizing municipalities to post turtle crossing signs on local roads located within the municipality.
