Form 5500 Filing Simplification Act

Maddy summaryThis bill simplifies filing requirements for employer-sponsored retirement plans. It extends the deadline for submitting Form 5500 (the annual report for retirement plans) from 210 days or 6 months after the plan year end to 15 days after the end of the 9th calendar month following the plan year. The bill directly affects employers and plan administrators who manage retirement plans under federal law, reducing administrative burdens and modernizing the filing process.

Cashless Bail Reporting Act

Maddy summaryHR 5625, the Cashless Bail Reporting Act, requires the Attorney General to publish and regularly update a public list of all states and local governments that allow cashless bail (release without requiring money bonds). This list must be available within 30 days of the bill's enactment and updated quarterly. The bill does not change existing bail laws but increases transparency by making it easier for the public to see where cashless bail is used. It directly affects individuals seeking information about bail practices in different jurisdictions. The key mechanism is a mandatory, publicly accessible database maintained by the federal government.

Logan's Law

Maddy summaryLogan's Law directs the Attorney General to create a free, public database listing individuals with qualifying violent convictions, requiring states that receive federal crime grants to submit their records. The database will allow searches by various personal details and conviction specifics, such as the judge and prosecutor involved, and must be updated at least every three months. Additionally, the bill requires the Attorney General to report on current barriers to sharing criminal records between states and the federal government and to propose solutions for improving this data exchange. States that fail to submit the required data could face penalties, including the withholding of federal Byrne JAG grant funds or the direct distribution of those funds to local governments within the state.

Maddy summaryThis bill authorizes the placement of a monument at Arlington National Cemetery to honor veterans of the Army Security Agency who served between 1945 and 1976. End H–1B Visa Abuse Act of 2026

Maddy summaryThis bill proposes a comprehensive overhaul of the H-1B visa program by pausing new issuances for three years and capping the annual limit at 25,000 visas. It would eliminate the current lottery system, replacing it with a process that prioritizes employers offering the highest wages, while also restricting visa holders to a maximum stay of three years and banning them from holding multiple jobs simultaneously. The legislation further mandates that all H-1B workers be paid at least $200,000 annually, prohibits staffing agencies from sponsoring these visas, and bars federal agencies from hiring or petitioning for H-1B workers. Additionally, the bill would end employment authorization for foreign students and interns, and generally prevent most nonimmigrants from adjusting their status to become permanent residents while in the United States.

To amend the Food and Nutrition Act of 2008 to modify the definition of food.

Maddy summaryThis bill, HR 8403, amends the Food and Nutrition Act of 2008 to modify the definition of eligible food items for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). It directly affects SNAP recipients by expanding the types of food they can purchase with their benefits. The key provision explicitly adds "hot rotisserie chicken" to the list of items considered SNAP-eligible food. This change would allow individuals using SNAP to buy prepared hot rotisserie chickens from authorized retailers.

Equal Representation Act of 2025

Equal Representation Act This bill requires that the statement sent by the President to Congress after the decennial census indicating the number of persons in each state exclude noncitizens. (This statement is the basis for reapportionment of U.S. Representatives.) The bill also requires any questionnaire used in the decennial census to include a checkbox or other similar option for respondents to indicate whether the respondent and each household member is (1) a U.S. citizen, (2) a U.S. national but not a citizen, (3) a non-U.S. national ( alien under federal law) lawfully residing in the United States, or (4) a non-U.S. national unlawfully residing in the United States. The Department of Commerce must make public the number of persons in each state, disaggregated by each of these four categories.

Equal Treatment for Farmers Act

Maddy summaryThe Equal Treatment for Farmers Act removes references to 'socially disadvantaged farmers and ranchers' from multiple federal agricultural laws and programs. This bill amends various statutes including the Federal Crop Insurance Act, Consolidated Farm and Rural Development Act, and other agricultural legislation to eliminate special preferences or categories based on social disadvantage status. The legislation also prohibits the USDA from providing any preference, priority consideration, or enhanced benefits based on race or gender in its programs. These changes affect how federal agricultural assistance, loans, and benefits are categorized and distributed to farmers and ranchers.

Designating Hamas Affiliates in America Act of 2026

Maddy summaryThis bill directs the U.S. Treasury Department to designate the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) as a Specially Designated Global Terrorist, which would block all U.S. assets belonging to CAIR and its affiliates and prohibit Americans from engaging in any financial transactions with the organization. The legislation also requires the Treasury Secretary to suspend CAIR's tax-exempt status under federal law. These actions are based on provisions in Executive Order 13224 that allow the government to restrict support for designated terrorist organizations. The bill includes a requirement for federal agencies to submit a detailed report to Congress within 30 days explaining the legal criteria used to justify the designation.
