HB 1529, titled "Assisting Self-murder" (a misleading term for suicide), would criminalize helping others attempt suicide in Florida. It creates two felony offenses: first-degree manslaughter for forcing someone to attempt suicide, and second-degree felony for aiding, abetting, providing means, participating in, or encouraging a suicide attempt. The bill directly affects individuals who assist others in self-harm, imposing penalties under Florida's criminal sentencing statutes. It does not address self-harm by the person attempting suicide itself. The bill is currently under review by the Criminal Justice Subcommittee and would take effect July 1, 2026, if passed.
