S 529: Eric’s Law

S 529, "Eric's Law," amends federal death penalty sentencing procedures to address jury deadlocks. It requires courts to impanel a new jury if the original jury fails to reach a unanimous sentencing recommendation (death, life without parole, or a lesser sentence) in capital cases. If the new jury also cannot agree unanimously, the court must impose a non-death sentence authorized by law. This directly affects federal defendants facing capital charges where juries cannot unanimously agree on sentencing.

HR 1200: National Right-to-Work Act

HR 1200, the National Right-to-Work Act, prohibits requiring workers to join a union or pay dues as a condition of employment in both private-sector workplaces (covered by the National Labor Relations Act) and railroad industries (covered by the Railway Labor Act). The bill amends key sections of these laws to eliminate provisions that allowed union security agreements, meaning workers in unionized settings would no longer be forced to pay dues to retain their jobs. This directly affects employees in unionized workplaces across the U.S., particularly those in industries with existing union contracts that included mandatory dues. The law changes the legal framework to ensure union membership and dues payment remain voluntary for all workers.

HR 1122: CBDC Anti-Surveillance State Act

CBDC Anti-Surveillance State Act This bill limits the ability of the Federal Reserve to (1) provide direct services to individuals, and (2) use a central bank digital currency. A central bank digital currency is a digital currency (e.g., Bitcoin or Ether) issued by a government-backed central bank. Specifically, the bill prohibits the Federal Reserve and the Federal Open Market Committee from using any central bank digital currency to implement monetary policy. In addition, a Federal Reserve bank is prohibited from offering products or services directly to an individual, maintaining an account on behalf of an individual, or issuing a central bank digital currency directly to an individual. The Federal Reserve must (1) consult with each Federal Reserve bank with respect to any central bank digital currency study or pilot program, and (2) issue quarterly reports on the findings and determinations of any such study or program.

HR 150: Protecting American Energy Production Act

HR 150, the Protecting American Energy Production Act, gives states primary authority to regulate hydraulic fracturing (fracking) for oil and gas on state and private lands, directly affecting state governments and energy producers. The bill requires states to maintain this regulatory role and blocks the President from imposing a fracking moratorium without explicit congressional approval. Key provisions include a Congressional "sense" statement affirming state primacy and a direct prohibition on presidential moratoriums unless authorized by a new law. This bill focuses on shifting regulatory power to states and limiting federal executive action on fracking, without specifying financial impacts or environmental standards.

HR 1088: Shirley Chisholm Congressional Gold Medal Act

HR 1088, the Shirley Chisholm Congressional Gold Medal Act, authorizes a posthumous Congressional Gold Medal to honor Congresswoman Shirley Chisholm, the first African-American woman elected to Congress (1968) and the first Black candidate for a major party's presidential nomination (1972). The bill directs the Treasury Secretary to design and strike a gold medal featuring Chisholm's image, which will be presented by Congress and then permanently displayed at the Smithsonian Institution. Duplicate bronze medals may be sold to the public to cover production costs, with proceeds deposited into the U.S. Mint fund. This bill commemorates Chisholm's legacy and achievements without creating new laws or affecting any current policies.

SJRES 15: A joint resolution disapproving the rule submitted by the Department of Commerce relating to "Procedures Covering Suspension of Liquidation, Duties and Estimated Duties in Accord With Presidential Proclamation 10414".

SJRES 15 is a joint resolution disapproving a rule issued by the Department of Commerce. The rule established procedures for suspending import duties under Presidential Proclamation 10414, which relates to trade measures affecting goods entering the U.S. This resolution, if enacted, would nullify the Commerce Department's rule (published at 87 Fed. Reg. 56868), meaning the suspended duty procedures would no longer apply to importers and customs operations. The bill directly affects businesses and importers subject to these customs procedures.

This joint resolution (SJRES 17) is a symbolic measure introduced in the U.S. Senate on February 16, 2023, to formally apologize to veterans of the Vietnam War for the mistreatment they faced upon returning home. It directly affects Vietnam War veterans and their families by recognizing their sacrifice and acknowledging the hostile reception they endured due to the war's divisiveness. The resolution urges the President to acknowledge this mistreatment during the Vietnam War Commemoration and expresses support for improved educational efforts in U.S. schools about veterans' experiences. As a non-binding resolution, it does not create new laws, provide funding, or alter policy - it serves solely as a formal statement of apology.

S 510: Expediting Israeli Aerial Refueling Act of 2023

This bill requires the U.S. Air Force to train Israeli pilots and ground crews on operating KC-46 refueling aircraft within 60 days of enactment, including participation in the U.S. Air Force Military Personnel Exchange Program. It mandates a report to Congress on deploying U.S. KC-46 aircraft to Israel on a rotational basis, with aircraft remaining in Israel for at least 270 days annually until either Israel commissions its own KC-46s or five years pass. The training and deployment provisions expire after ten years. S 488: FOIA Fix Act of 2023

S 488, the FOIA Fix Act of 2023, amends the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) to restrict access to government records. It prohibits agencies from releasing records to non-citizens, foreign entities without U.S. headquarters, or subsidiaries of entities based in specific countries (including China, Russia, Iran, and Cuba). The bill also imposes penalties of up to $10,000 and one year in prison for knowingly assisting prohibited requesters. Additionally, it allows agencies to withhold sensitive technical information related to emerging U.S. technologies if disclosure could harm national interests. The law aims to limit access to government data for certain foreign-affiliated requesters while preserving exemptions for immigration proceedings.

S 472: Iran Nuclear Treaty Act

This bill requires any U.S. agreement with Iran regarding its nuclear program to be treated as a treaty, mandating Senate approval by a two-thirds vote before it can take effect. It directly affects the President, who cannot bypass this requirement to waive or reduce sanctions related to Iran's nuclear activities. The key provision blocks the President from granting sanctions relief or taking related actions under any Iran nuclear deal - including joint plans, side agreements, or future documents - without first securing Senate treaty approval. This applies to all forms of agreements, whether legally binding or not, and covers all related materials like annexes or technical understandings.

S 505: Immigration Parole Reform Act of 2023

This bill amends U.S. immigration law to create specific, limited pathways for temporary parole into the United States. It directly affects military families (spouses/children of active-duty service members), Cuban nationals with approved petitions meeting strict criteria, and individuals facing urgent medical needs, family emergencies, or law enforcement-related public benefits. Key provisions require case-by-case decisions (not class-based eligibility), limit parole to 1 year (with possible 1-year extensions), and mandate annual congressional reporting on parole usage. Parole does not count as admission, so recipients cannot adjust to permanent residency through this status.
