SNAP Tribal Food Sovereignty Act of 2026

The SNAP Tribal Food Sovereignty Act of 2026 allows Indian Tribes to take over the planning, running, and management of their own Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) operations. This change is made by updating the Indian Self-Determination and Education Assistance Act to let Tribes request these contracts through a formal Tribal resolution. Under the bill, the Department of Agriculture must provide the same terms and procedures for these new contracts as it does for other self-governance agreements. Additionally, the Bureau of Indian Affairs will offer technical support to both the Department of Agriculture and the Tribes to help them navigate this process. The legislation aims to increase tribal control over food assistance programs without altering the core rules of how SNAP functions.
