S 3019 United States Senate · 118th Congress

Native Histories and Cultures Education Act of 2023

The Native Histories and Cultures Education Act of 2023 would create a federal program to improve K-12 education about Native American histories and cultures. The National Museum of the American Indian would develop a base curriculum after consultation with tribes, which would be made freely available to schools. States and tribes could apply for grants to develop local curriculum based on this base curriculum, with requirements for professional development for educators and reporting on program effectiveness. The bill aims to incorporate accurate information about tribal sovereignty, correct historical misrepresentations, and address policies like the Indian Boarding School Policy.
