HR 2820 United States House · 118th Congress

Justice for Jana Elementary Act of 2023

This bill directs the Department of Energy to establish new cleanup goals for Jana Elementary School in Florissant, Missouri, within 120 days of enactment to remove all radioactive contamination above background levels. It creates a $25 million Radioactive School Assistance Fund to reimburse local schools for testing costs and provide up to $20 million per impacted school toward constructing new buildings (e.g., replacing Jana Elementary). The bill also mandates investigations of all Hazelwood School District schools as "vicinity properties" under the Corps of Engineers' program, requiring public reports on contamination levels and risks to students. It specifically targets schools closed after January 2020 with detected radiation within 1,000 feet of classrooms.
