SB 1348 California Senate · 2025-2026 Regular Session

Life and disability insurance contracts.

Summary
Existing law generally regulates classes of insurance, including life and disability insurance. Existing law grants a person an insurable interest in the life and health of, among others, themselves or a person upon whom they depend for education or support. This bill would make technical, nonsubstantive changes to that provision.

MODERATE
SB 1348 makes two types of changes: (1) substantive amendments to Section 10110 of the Insurance Code replacing gendered pronouns with gender-neutral language and changing 'Every' to 'A', and (2) extensive formatting changes converting the document from a traditional legislative layout to a web page presentation with navigation elements. The substantive change modernizes the insurable interest provision to use inclusive language without altering its legal meaning.
DEFINITION

Section 10110 opening changed from 'Every A person has an insurable interest' - replacing 'Every' with 'A' as the article before 'person'

Subsection (a) changed from 'Himself' to 'Themselves' to use gender-neutral language for self-insurable interest

Subsection (b) changed from 'he depends' to 'they depend' when describing a person on whom someone depends for education or support

Subsection (c) changed from 'to him' to 'to them' when describing a person under a legal obligation for payment of money, property, or services

Subsection (d) changed from 'vested in him' to 'vested in them' when describing an estate or interest that depends on a person's life

TECHNICAL

The entire document was reformatted from a traditional legislative bill layout (with line numbers, page headers, and column formatting) into a web page presentation including navigation menus, search fields, and UI elements. No substantive policy content was added or removed by this formatting change.
