SB 339 would allow Texas counties and municipalities to set their own minimum wage rates higher than the current state minimum wage (which aligns with the federal $7.25/hour rate). Local governments could establish these higher wages for employers operating within their jurisdictions, including unincorporated county areas and zones outside city limits. The bill amends the Labor Code to clarify that such local minimum wages apply to private employers in those areas, while excluding state/federal job training programs and requiring private contractors to follow wage terms in government contracts. It takes effect September 1, 2025, if passed.
