Relating to benefits provided to eligible survivors of certain public safety employees.
SB 2761 expands survivor benefits for families of public safety employees who die while performing job duties. It adds eligibility for survivors if an employee dies from a heart attack or stroke within 24 hours of performing duty, in addition to existing injury-related deaths. Surviving spouses, children (if no spouse), or parents (if no spouse or children) become eligible for assistance under Chapter 615 of the Texas Government Code. The bill takes effect September 1, 2025, applying only to deaths occurring on or after that date.
