This bill allows physician assistants and advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs) to prescribe or order Schedule II controlled substances (highly regulated drugs like opioids) within federally permitted narcotic drug treatment programs (NDTPs). It specifically amends delegation rules so physicians can authorize these providers to prescribe as part of a patient's treatment plan in NDTPs that already hold a valid permit under Texas law. The change applies only to NDTPs, not general hospital or hospice settings. This would expand access to medication-assisted treatment for individuals with opioid use disorder within approved programs. The bill would take effect September 1, 2025, if not approved for immediate effect.
