Constitutional amendment; removing requirement of political party affiliation for certain membership of the Judicial Nominating Commission.

This constitutional amendment (SJR 13) would remove a requirement that certain members of Oklahoma's Judicial Nominating Commission must have political party affiliation. Specifically, it eliminates the current rule limiting the number of commissioners from any single political party (no more than two "at large" members and no more than three among governor-appointed members). The change would apply to all members of the 15-member commission, which selects judicial candidates. If approved by voters, the amendment would allow the governor, Senate President, and House Speaker to appoint commissioners without regard to political party membership. The proposal must be voted on by Oklahoma citizens in a referendum.
