Relates to the collection of certain demographic information by certain state agencies, boards, departments and commissions

This bill requires New York State agencies, boards, departments, and commissions that collect demographic data on ancestry or ethnic origin to establish separate collection categories for Middle Eastern and North African (MENA) groups. Instead of being included in a broader "White group," agencies must use distinct categories for specific North African groups (e.g., Egyptian, Moroccan) and Middle Eastern groups (e.g., Yemeni, Lebanese), plus a category for other MENA groups. The collected data, if of sufficient quality, must be included in demographic reports and made publicly available on agency websites, with personal identifying information remaining confidential, starting January 1, 2027. Agencies unable to comply must post a public progress report detailing their steps and an estimated timeframe for compliance.
