Permits accidental death benefits and/or special accidental death benefits to be awarded to the beneficiary of Patricia Espinosa

This bill allows the retirement system to pay accidental death benefits to the family of Patricia Espinosa, a Nassau County police officer who died in a car accident on her way to work in January 2026. Although she was not on duty at the exact moment of the crash, the law treats her death as if it happened while performing her official duties to qualify her family for these funds. If her family has already received other death payments from the system, those amounts will be subtracted from the new benefits to prevent double compensation. The state of New York will cover all costs related to this act, which applies retroactively to the date of her death.
