Authorizes the use of photo speed violation monitoring systems in highway construction or maintenance work areas on all highways
This bill authorizes New York's transportation department to use photo speed cameras in highway construction and maintenance zones on all state highways. It allows up to 40 work zones to be equipped with these systems to automatically capture vehicles traveling more than 10 mph over posted speed limits. Vehicle owners - not drivers - would be liable for fines if violations are documented by the cameras, though this doesn't apply if the driver was already convicted of the speeding offense. The program requires the department to select locations based on crash history and speed data, and to report violation statistics by speed range.
