A 5315 New Jersey General Assembly · 2026-2027 Regular Session

Establishes "Combat Veteran Pension Credit Act"; provides eligible combat veterans up to four years of pension credit at no cost.

This bill creates the Combat Veteran Pension Credit Act to automatically grant eligible combat veterans up to four years of pension credit when they join public service roles in New Jersey. To qualify, a veteran must have received an honorable discharge and been awarded a Combat Action Ribbon or an equivalent decoration by the U.S. Armed Forces. The program applies to members of the Judicial, Police and Firemen's, Public Employees', State Police, and Teachers' pension systems and eliminates the usual financial cost of buying back military service time. The Department of Veterans Affairs will verify eligibility and ensure the credit is applied without requiring any payment from the veteran.
