A 227 New Jersey General Assembly · 2026-2027 Regular Session

Provides tuition-free credits to certain institutions of higher education for certain law enforcement officers and firefighters and their spouses and dependents.

This bill would provide tuition-free credits (up to 16 per semester for eight semesters) at public or degree-granting colleges to: 1) Retired law enforcement officers/firefighters who retired due to service-related injuries/illnesses, and 2) Dependents or spouses of officers/firefighters who died in the line of duty. To qualify, recipients must apply for all available federal and state student aid first, and maintain enrollment in good academic standing. The state would reimburse institutions for uncovered tuition costs after other aid is applied.
