This bill creates a four-year pilot program to test using triploid grass carp (a sterile type of grass carp) for controlling weeds in freshwater lakes, as an alternative to herbicides. It appropriates $150,000 to provide matching grants (up to $50,000 each) to three lake management organizations managing lakes between 10 and 25 acres, covering costs for purchasing the carp and building containment barriers. The bill also establishes a Triploid Grass Carp Commission within the Department of Environmental Protection to evaluate the program's effectiveness, safety, and lessons from other states, and to submit a final report to the Governor and Legislature. The commission must report within 120 days after the pilot ends, and the bill expires 30 days after that report is submitted.
