S 651 New Jersey Senate · 2024-2025 Regular Session

Establishes pilot program in which certain selected school districts equip school buses with global positioning systems and DOE develops school bus tracking application.

This bill establishes a four-year pilot program requiring selected school districts to equip their school buses with real-time GPS tracking systems. The New Jersey Department of Education will develop a mobile application allowing parents or guardians to track their child's bus location and speed via their smartphones during transit. To participate, districts must own their own bus fleets and be selected from each of the state's three geographic regions. The GPS systems must operate continuously while buses transport students and follow safety guidelines developed with the Motor Vehicle Commission.
