S 4819 New Jersey Senate · 2024-2025 Regular Session

Increases scope of practice for licensed practical nurses and patient care technicians under certain circumstances.

This bill expands the roles of licensed practical nurses (LPNs) and patient care technicians (PCTs) working in New Jersey dialysis centers. Specifically, it allows LPNs to perform pre- and post-dialysis assessments without requiring a registered nurse's judgment or intervention, provided any abnormalities are immediately reported to a registered nurse. It also permits PCTs - after national certification and specific training - to administer saline and heparin, which was previously prohibited under state regulations. The Commissioner of Health must establish implementing rules within 180 days of the bill's effective date.
