This bill (S 471) waives adoption fees for veterans adopting dogs or cats from local government-owned kennels, shelters, or pounds in New Jersey. It specifically eliminates fees covering veterinary exams, vaccinations, spaying/neutering, and administrative charges - commonly included in adoption costs. Local shelters may adjust other fees to offset revenue losses from this waiver. The benefit applies to veterans honorably discharged from military service, including eligible WWII Merchant Mariners. The bill takes effect immediately upon enactment.
