This bill establishes a four-year pilot program to test triploid grass carp as a herbicide alternative for controlling weeds in freshwater lakes, specifically targeting lakes between 10-25 acres. The Department of Environmental Protection will award matching grants (up to $50,000 each) to three lake management organizations for purchasing carp and building containment barriers. It also creates a Triploid Grass Carp Commission - comprising DEP staff, environmental experts, university researchers, and lake management representatives - to evaluate the safety, effectiveness, and regulatory lessons of this approach, and to submit findings and recommendations to the Governor and Legislature after the pilot concludes. The program is funded with $150,000 from the General Fund.
