A 3255 New Jersey General Assembly · 2024-2025 Regular Session

Establishes loan redemption program for certified veterinarians employed as large animal veterinarians in New Jersey.

This bill establishes the Large Animal Veterinarian Loan Redemption Program, which helps certified veterinarians with student loan debt by redeeming a portion of their loans in exchange for working in underserved areas. To qualify, participants must be New Jersey residents who graduated from an approved veterinary program, completed a residency, and agree to practice large animal veterinary medicine in a state-designated underserved area for five years. For each year of service, the state redeems 20% of eligible student loan expenses (principal and interest), totaling 100% after five years. The Higher Education Student Assistance Authority administers the program and matches participants to underserved areas designated by the Secretary of Agriculture due to veterinarian shortages.
