Study dependent neglect standards for prosecutors

This joint resolution (LC 504) requests an interim study to examine standardizing how prosecutors handle dependent neglect cases across Montana. It specifically aims to evaluate whether statewide prosecution standards are needed and whether expanding the Child Protection Unit’s role to handle all such cases could improve consistency, fairness, and child welfare outcomes. The study, to be completed by September 2026, will assess feasibility, including financial and operational impacts, and report findings to the 70th Legislature. It does not create new law but seeks to inform future policy decisions.
