Interim study of U.S. Route 212

This joint resolution (LC 4486) requests the Montana Legislative Council to conduct an interim study of U.S. Highway 212 east of Billings. The study will examine dangerous conditions on this rural roadway - such as poor road surfaces, limited winter maintenance, lack of cell service, and high fatality rates (the highest rural fatality rate in Montana from 2013-2022) - affecting motorists and communities in Bighorn County and surrounding areas. It directs the Legislative Council to gather data from Montana DOT, local governments, and community members to identify solutions for reducing fatalities and improve safety. The study must conclude by September 15, 2026, with findings reported to the 70th Legislature.
