LC 2873 Legislature · 2025 Regular Session

Generally revise laws related to digital mapping of and hunting from navigable rivers and islands

This bill updates Montana laws governing digital mapping and public access to navigable rivers and islands. It requires all entities distributing digital maps to align with state library maps by August 1, 2025, and to clearly mark former river locations as private land requiring permission. The legislation also restricts hunting and certain recreational activities on navigable rivers and islands, specifically prohibiting shotgun and rifle use for big game hunting from watercraft or across riverbanks, and limiting access to state-owned islands to bow or crossbow hunting only. Additionally, it assigns the state library responsibility for maintaining and updating geospatial information systems while requiring the commission to establish rules for recreational use of different water classes.
