HB 208 creates Mississippi's first whistleblower reward program for reporting theft or misuse of state government funds. It requires the Department of Audit to pay whistleblowers 15% of recovered funds - capped at $250,000 - if they provide original, verified information leading to successful recovery. The bill protects whistleblower identity confidentially (except in limited court cases) and exempts related communications from public records. It applies only to reports made after the law takes effect and excludes Department of Audit employees, elected officials, and their direct supervisors from qualifying as whistleblowers.
