SB 202 Michigan Senate · 2025-2026 Regular Session

Crimes: other; summoning law enforcement to residence through intentional false report of a serious law enforcement emergency; prohibit, and provide penalties. Amends sec. 411a of 1931 PA 328 (MCL 750.411a).

Senate Bill 202 amends existing law to specifically prohibit intentionally making false reports of medical or other emergencies to emergency services, such as police, fire departments, or 9-1-1 operators. This bill addresses incidents where individuals falsely report serious emergencies to provoke an emergency response, sometimes known as "swatting." Penalties for these false reports vary, increasing significantly if the emergency response leads to physical injury, serious impairment, or death. The bill also allows courts to order convicted individuals, or the parents of juvenile offenders, to pay for the costs incurred by the emergency response.
