Human Relations - Protection of the Free Exercise of Religion

HB 1019 creates new rules for Maryland government actions that might limit religious practices. It requires that any law or policy substantially burdening religious exercise must serve a compelling government interest (like public safety) and be the least restrictive option available. Individuals or religious groups affected can seek court orders or damages through civil lawsuits. The law applies to state and local governments starting July 1, 2025, but does not change how government provides funding or benefits.
