HF 322, the "Stop Squatters Act," allows real property owners (or their authorized agents) to request police or sheriff intervention to remove people occupying their property without permission, under specific conditions. To qualify, the owner must have notified the person they are unauthorized, the occupant cannot be a tenant, family member, or involved in pending legal disputes, and the property must not be in a city. If verified, law enforcement directs the occupant to leave immediately, returns property to the owner, and may charge the occupant an hourly fee for services. The bill also creates new misdemeanor penalties for trespassers who cause property damage after being notified to leave - simple misdemeanor for under $1,000 damage, serious misdemeanor for over $1,000.
