SCR 1008 requires Arizona municipalities and counties to obtain a two-thirds vote from their governing bodies (common councils for cities, boards of supervisors for counties) to increase any taxes, fees, or assessments. If approved by voters, this law would replace current local rules with a statewide requirement for such increases. The bill states that regulating these tax/fee hikes is a "matter of statewide concern" and prevents local governments from creating additional rules for these changes. This referendum measure is now awaiting voter approval at the next general election.
