HB 232 Alabama House · 2024 Regular Session

Scope of practice of physical therapists

This bill expands the scope of practice for licensed physical therapists in Alabama by allowing them to conduct initial patient screenings without a prior referral from a doctor, dentist, chiropractor, physician assistant, or nurse practitioner. Under the new rules, therapists can independently evaluate patients to determine if physical therapy is needed and create a treatment plan for specific situations, such as children with diagnosed developmental disabilities, home health or nursing home patients, wellness fitness activities, and individuals with conditions diagnosed within the last 90 days. While the requirement for a referral remains for most other cases, the changes enable therapists to initiate care more directly in these defined areas, effective October 1, 2024.
